The Shreveport Historic Preservation Society is pleased to present some of the photographs provided to us from the Gene Winegeart collection. Much of the collection focuses on the 1916-1940 era in and around Shreveport. There is a sizeable collection of images from Pelco Well Tools and Supply, which had offices in Shreveport as well as other outlying towns. Pelco in Shreveport was located at Lake Street and McNeil. In one of the photographs, taken around 1940, an aerial view, one can see Central Station in the upper left. At the corner of Short Line and Marshall, the two then current gasoline stations are visible. A rather large collection of shotgun houses dot both sides of Short Line in the upper right of the photo. This part of Short Line, if one were traveling it today, would lead directly to the historic Fertitta’s Deli after passing McNeil, Louisiana, and Common Streets. The Pelco complex was demolished around 2000, and the site is now partially occupied by the Rescue Mission.
Other images from the collection may be posted as time permits. These include Pelco shops in Haynesville, Cotton Valley, Vivian, and Monroe. Also, included are 12 photos of tornado damage in 1912 in an unidentified location and the Monroe flood of 1932.
